Longboarding, a sport where fitness and intensity goes hand in hand. It gained popularity in late 1950s and was crafted to satirize surfing on concrete surfaces. Longboards are like skateboards but are archetypally wider and longer.

This one is my favourite. I love downhill riding and use slide braking to stop the board. Let me explain how this technique works. You need to quickly turn the board to stop it, make sure to turn it sideways to control the sliding and the board will automatically come to a halt. Practice makes a man perfect so try slide braking from either the front or the back. For added stability, you can even stop the board by locating your hands on the ground. I would suggest wearing riding gloves or else you will get your hands badly bruised up.

Board walking:

As the name suggests, the rider moves his feet up and down the board deck. To your surprise, this technique basically comes in use for longer boards. Depending upon your boarding level, you can try twisting, turning and jumping on the board to add zest and zing in your voyage.

Practice Balancing On The Longboard With These Easy Steps

In this article, I would call for some tricks of balancing on the long board. Here goes the step by step approach:

Step 1: Pick Your Longboards

Choose an ideal board from three types of available boards in the market. They are usually 5 feet long by 8 inches wide with wheels mounted on the trucks. Grip tape, a surface of the board offers easy stay of your shoes on the board.

Step 2: Work on your stance

Long boarding, in all forms, asks you to work on your stance. How you stand on the board do matters a lot. Keeping your body face to the right and left foot forward is “regular” position whereas right foot forward and facing to the left is “goofy” position.

Tip: To check your stance, stand straight and fall forward. Now, whichever foot you use to catch yourself is your dominant stance.

Step 3: Get hold of the board

Get on the board by pushing your body weight from the back foot to front foot. The key to hold the board is to place your front foot near the front bolts and back foot near the back bolts of the board.

  • Place the toes and balls of your feet on the board and hang off the heels the other side.
  • For the back foot, keep the ball of your foot around the centre of the tail. It will equip you to turn on either side of the board by lifting the front of the board.
  • Grab hold of lower two screws with your front foot and let your heel and toes hang off the edge of the board. Keep your back foot in a way which keeps your heel on the board and toes hanging off the board.
  • Keep your back foot on the bottom curve so that the board gets snooped between the back wheels and back foot.
  • Without any pressure, place the front foot on the back of the bottom two screws.

Step 4: Maintain balance

Now stand straight while keeping your weight on the feet. Bend your legs and elbows and keep your arms perpendicular to the ground. Stretch your legs and balance yourself.

Step 5: Practice the posture

Here you need to push off the board with your feet.

  • Let your toes face forward by rotating your front foot 45 degrees.
  • Locate your weight on the board’s front.
  • Now, get off your back foot and place it near to your front foot. But make sure that your toes face forward.
  • Give a slight push to the ground keeping your back heaved up. You can use the ball of your foot.
  • On the back of the board, keep your back foot and rotate the front foot back.

Step 6: Try turning to left and right

Though people having regular stance need to incline and put weight on the balls of feet, goofy stance people put weight on heels for turning right. For left turning, turn-round the technique.

  • Learn to Fall to Avoid Injury: Rather than flapping on your way down, it would be better that you learn the trick of stopping the board.
  • Fall Forwards: Keep your body facing the side. Cover your face with your upper arm and your hand must be on your shoulder.
  • Fall Backwards: Bend down your knees and put your head down. Cover your head down with your arms. Now turn and spin.
